Fired Over Zoom
Approximately 9% (although the CEO estimates it was closer to 15%) of Better.com’s mortgage staff was let go via a company zoom call with the founder’s CEO. In it, Garg announced that if they were on the call, they were “part of the unlucky group that is being laid off.” Employees were shocked by the news, noting that the company had just received $750 million from investors the day before.
The video, which lasts less than 3 minutes, starts abruptly and ends with the unfortunate news that the 900 or so listeners were having their employment terminated. The notice was effective immediately to the dismay of the workers, particularly in light of the approaching holidays.
Publicity Woes for the Nearly $7 Billion Company
Reports value the company at approximately $6.9 billion, consistently ranking among LinkedIn’s Top Startups. An in-depth article by the Orange County Register estimates that Better.com has $1 billion in cash. The CEO cited market changes, proficiency, productivity, and performances as some of the reasons for the layoffs.
Days after the call, Garg stated in a series of messages reported on by Fortune that the employees were laid off because they had been “stealing” from their coworkers and customers by being unproductive and only working a couple of hours a day.
Multiple sources report that the CEO regularly cursed during video calls and sent an email calling employees “slow” and “dumb dolphins.”
