Amazon’s Injury Rate

According to CNBC, Amazon has faced allegations of unsafe work conditions for years. Workers have reported high rates of injuries in warehouses across the country. Data from the OSHA shows that in 2021 the injury rate at some Amazon warehouses was 12 out of every 100 workers. The astonishing number marked an injured worker rate of 1.5x the industry average.

While last year’s injury rate for all Amazon workers was considerably lower at 6.9 for every 100 employees, it was still high compared to others in the industry. Due to the size of Amazon’s workforce, this means that thousands of people are injured each year while working for the delivery giant.

OSHA Violations

Amazon’s working conditions have led to multiple OSHA violations at their warehouses. As reported by CNBC, inspections by the labor department at seven of the company’s warehouses across five states led to citations being issued at each location. Some of the hazards, including improper practices that resulted in citations, are believed to be occurring at warehouses nationwide.

The regulator also accused the company of failing to “properly report worker injuries and illnesses.” This means that the actual number of injuries and illnesses may be much higher than the records indicate.

Federal Investigations Into Wrongdoing

It is not only OSHA that is investigating unsafe working conditions at Amazon facilities. The Department of Justice (DOJ) has also launched an inquiry into workplace safety at the warehouses. The DOJ is seeking assistance from current and former Amazon employees that can provide insight into the conditions at the sites.

OSHA and the DOJ both allege that Amazon put speed ahead of safety resulting in numerous preventable injuries to workers across the country. Investigations into potential safety violations continue at warehouses in multiple states.
