Harassment in the Workplace: the Impact on Employees

Imagine going into work one day, when all of a sudden, you’re the victim of harassment. There are a number of ways this can happen and there are situations in which employees are harassed for a personal characteristic.

There are laws in place that allow individuals to work without fear of harassment. Unfortunately, not all employers or co-workers adhere to these laws and still harass other employees to the point of making them uncomfortable or creating a hostile work environment.

Understanding how harassment happens and what you can do about it is important. Here is what you should look out for.

Racial Comments or Stereotypes

When someone makes inappropriate comments or jokes based on someone’s race, they are displaying harassing characteristics. They are also making the workplace uncomfortable for others who do not agree with the racial comments or those of the race being targeted by jokes.

Unwanted Sexual Advancements

Individuals are often the target of unwanted sexual advancements by employers and co-workers. Any inappropriate touching, comments, jokes, or any other types of advancement should be reported as soon as possible to help protect your rights.

This is something that should not be tolerated as it makes for a difficult work environment and some people even quit to avoid this type of situation.

Actions Based on Gender or Age

In some situations, an employer or co-worker may prevent someone from doing something, or order a specific job to an employee because of their gender or age. This can be frustrating for the affected employee who may be as capable—or even more capable—than the person who got the job.

Harassment based on age or gender can also include jokes, inappropriate comments or discussions, and more.

Our Los Angeles employee rights lawyers work hard to protect employees from harassment, or from retaliation after reporting the harassment. It’s important to know that as an employee, you have rights and our team at Levin & Nalbandyan, LLP is here to protect them.
