What Makes TBIs So Dangerous?
It is always important to seek professional medical attention as soon as possible after being involved in any type of traumatic accident, but going to the doctor immediately after suffering a blow to the head is crucial. On top of being uniquely severe and potentially life-threatening, moderate to severe TBIs do not always produce obvious symptoms for hours or even days after they occur. By the time it does become clear that a serious injury has occurred, it may be too late to prevent an irreversible loss of brain function.
In particular, anyone who suspects they may have sustained a traumatic brain injury due to someone else’s misconduct should be on the lookout for any of the following symptoms, all of which could be signs of serious brain trauma:
- Loss of consciousness for several minutes or more
- Uneven pupil dilation
- Clear fluid coming out of the nose or ears
- Continuous and severe nausea, vomiting, headaches, or dizziness
- Loss of coordination
- Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes
- Significant difficulty speaking, concentrating, or waking up from sleep
- Dramatic changes in mood or personality
